A Panel Review By Melissa Compton.

Originally from the New York Comic-Con, MCM London presented a screening of this panel on the Main Stage this morning. Tara Bennett led an interesting panel with co-directors Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama also in attendance was executive producer Joseph Chou and renowned Futurist Maurice Conti. The forthcoming TV Series Blade Runner, Black Lotus takes place after Blackout which led up to 2022. The series is set in 2032 with a focus on soul and identity. The team set out to explore opening up the world of a franchise in a similar way to The Matrix and the medium of Television is perfect for this, given Blade Runners undeniable impact on anime filmmakers it made it the perfect choice.

The panel explained how many of the things we see in Blade Runner – Blackout now exist and are available or close to being so, with the example of genetically modified cats that glow in dark like generically modified fish and it is reasonable to assume science and technology will only continue at an increased rate in the future.

The Tv series will pose questions about what makes us human? And where indeed do the blurred lines of humanity lie? Following the story of a replicant, the extended medium of Television allows the series to explore the meaning behind the replicant’s actions and revelations we see the main character questioning her soul, and where her identity lies as the creators seek to expand the Blade Runner world. Maurice Conti talked elegantly about the power of the narrative to shape reality and how he is motivated by mediums that have a real-world impact.

The series will contain neo-futuristic scenes and key art shared to close the session make it clear that we can expect to see a perfect mix of familiar and unfamiliar items in the artwork for the new series.

With the first episode due for release in America on 13 November 2021, Blade Runner – Black Lotus is set in Los Angeles 2032. A young woman wakes up without memories but possessing deadly skills.
